Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest particular rulings made by the official, echoing the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
